According to the definition by The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), ecotourism is the “responsible travel to natural areas to conserve the environment and improves the well-being of local people.”
Ecotourism is a portmanteau of the two words, Ecological and Tourism. While it suggests travel to some destinations, it also connotes an ecological aspect. Ecotourism focuses on volunteering, finding ways, and helping with the betterment of the planet. The Ecotourist intends to do away with conventional tourist ways which contributes to the degradation of natural resources, pollution, and corrupting the cultural integrity of the tourist spot.
Eco-tourism holidays should go out of their way to preserve the environment and stay true to the local cultures and customs. An eco-tourism holiday could be a walking holiday, an animal conservation holiday, a desert tour, and more. Taking an eco-tourism holiday does not have to be uncomfortable. There are many hotels and agencies that cater to eco-tourism holidays, yet with a comfortable offer. When travelers learn and respect the country that they are traveling and staying in, the holiday maker benefits, as well. A common misconception is that eco-tourism holidays cost more, but this certainly does not have to be the case. Many resort hotels are built by using energy saving devices, such as automatic lights and water saving measures that keep costs low.
